Costa Rica’s Ministry of Health announced that it will restrict the use of glyphosate in some sectors of the country and that there will be new regulations in other parts, because of how toxic this product is for humans.
According to the Minister of Health of Costa Rica, Daniel Salas, glyphosate, which is a herbicide widely used in the field, can cause diseases such as cancer.
In Costa Rica, glyphosate is mainly used in rice, pineapple, and other vegetable crops. It has been linked to the incidence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in Guanacaste, as well as cancer.
The inter-institutional work unit of Costa Rica’s Government is made up of the Ministries of Health, Agriculture and Livestock, Environment, and Energy. In this sense, they took an important political decision to prevent people from having health problems.
